Porn of the Ages Gets a Facelift
For Immediate Release
Los Angeles, CA- Erotic University announces their 2008 gallery schedule of digitally restored erotica from ancient Greece to the twentieth century. This coming year they will have 36 new galleries and plan to digitally restore over 3,000 works of art and photographs. These galleries are part of the Erotic University virtual campus, an explorable interactive environment that includes classes, recreation, entertainment, a library of over 100 e-books, and continually expanding features
Erotic art from the past is much more then the demurely draped nudes we so often think of. According to EU president Jeff Booth, “It could get quite raunchy, both in early photography and in paintings going back to antiquity. There are some very old erotic images from our collection of over 60,000 that we will probably never publicly display, as even today, they have the power to shock even jaded viewers. Anything you can see on a porn DVD was drawn or painted by artists throughout history. They did not lack in erotic imagination, they just lacked the technology.”
Each month, three new galleries are introduced. There is a gallery related to art in books and magazines in the Library gallery, and there is a painting and illustration gallery and a photographic gallery in the Visual Arts Department. This year’s gallery themes include The Bible Illustrated, From Smut to Superman, Sex on Vinyl, Behind the Pose, The Orgy in Art, The Erotic Art of the Masters, The Male Nude in Art, and Parodying the Powerful.
According to Booth, Erotic art is an important part of the educational mission of Erotic University. It teaches how people in the past viewed themselves as sexual beings and the standards of beauty and what was erotic, and how this has changed over time. It also shows us that the erotic imagination always found a way to express itself, even in very repressive times. Plus, he points out, some of it is the most passionate and intimate of the works created by famous artists and much of it is stunningly beautiful.
Erotic art, photography, and film examples are sprinkled throughout the Erotic University virtual campus. You can find a number of biblical art themes in the interactive lab for the Sex and the Bible class. The History Department has a digital restoration project of erotic art from Pompeii. On the commons, you can find photography and films relating to nudism, and classic erotic films are screened regularly in Ellis Auditorium in the Student Union. The Radio, Television, Film department has a class on Pre-Code film that includes many rare stills and clips from the early days of film making when movies where a lot more daring than you might guess.
The digital restoration process involves scratch, dust and crack removal, color correction to remove the yellowing and other color shifts caused by aging, and other image processing techniques in an attempt to bring the art closer to its original appearance.
