The Marie Project

Marie is an experimental long term project to design an artificially intelligent agent that will have access to a large database of knowledge about sexuality. Marie is based on AIML, the Artificial Intelligence Markup Language, and the work of Dr. Richard Wallace at the A.L.I.C.E. AI Foundation. This technology makes a natural language interface possible so that guests can communicate with her using normal conversation through a standard keyboard.

Marie is named after Marie Stopes, a pioneering sex educator and one of the most remarkable women of her time. Extremely intelligent and an accomplished paleobotanist, she took up the cause of birth control and opened the first free birth control clinic in England. In 1918, she published Married Love, a phenomenally successful marriage manual that offered information on sexuality in a very frank manner.  It sold over a million copies and was translated into 13 languages.

The Marie Project allows sex educators and other experts to interact with Marie and contribute to her education. By questioning her about what she knows, they can fill in the gaps in her knowledge by explaining aspects of sexuality to her that she is not currently aware of. This information is then incorporated into her knowledge base.
