The Bible Illustrated

Through the dark ages up until the 1400’s, the only acceptable nude depiction in art was that of Adam and Eve. Biblical scenes then became a popular way for artists to introduce nudity and sexual themes, which they did for the stories about Bathsheba, Lot and his Daughters, Susanna and the Elders, Samson and Delilah, and others. This gallery looks at the way artists depicted these scenes from the 1400’s through to the twentieth century.

It also traces the surprising BDSM history of Wonder Woman. Includes over 200 covers.

The Nude Outdoors

Photographing nudes outdoors in the early days of photography was challenging. You needed to find a spot with some privacy, and you had none of the comforts or control you had in a studio. This collection represents the works of photographers who were willing to brave the elements, and the importance of the 1925 introduction of the Leica camera to outdoor nude photography.

Parodying the Powerful

From priests to Napoleon, artists have used sexually explicit drawings to mock those in power. This collection of illustrations represents what was often a powerful form of political commentary.

The Photography of Jean Angelou

He produced more nude photography than anyone else in his time. He was known as the Naughty Nude Photographer of Paris.

The Male Nude in Art

There is little surprise that the female form was a far more common subject with artists. Even today in film, the male nude is much less common, and often gets a more restrictive rating from the MPAA than a similar scene with just female nudity. Still, there were many great appreciators of the male form, from the Greeks onward.

Erotic Art of the Masters

Many famous artists created erotic art, but most of this work never goes on exhibit and is little known. Here we look at little seen erotic works from some of the greatest painters of all time.

French Postcards

They were never actually sent through the mail- that would have been illegal, and when they were found in the possession of Union troops, an officer wrote directly to President Lincoln to complain about the problem. This gallery offers many examples of what the officer was complaining about, along with a little history about them.
