Access Instructional Media's tapes also cover a wide variety of topics. Dr. Michael Perry has been a sexologist for over 22 years, but he started out in the priesthood. He left because he could no longer stand the authoritarian lifestyle. He wanted to stay in a profession that helped people, though, and so went on to receive a Masters degree in psychology. He specialized in sex therapy, and received a doctorate after studying under some of the top names in the field, including Lonnie Barbach, Wardell Pomeroy, and others. Dr. Perry stresses the importance of learning the fundamentals. A lot of people want to jump ahead to the advanced tapes, he says, but getting the basics down first is very important. There is a lot of basic knowledge that people are often missing. His basic philosophy is that sex is a good thing, and that we need to rethink why we have sex: "Sex is not just for procreation, it is for pleasure, to build a relationship, to build a bond, that is the basic gap." One of the problems he sees with our culture's negative view of sexuality is that it refocuses part of the appeal of sex to its being forbidden and dangerous. Once people get married and the thrill of the forbidden is gone, many people see a decrease in their sex drives. Interestingly, he notes that in 60% of the cases where one partner wants more sex than the other, it is the woman who is the one left wanting. For those who are seeing some flagging desire in their relationship, he suggests the Intimacy Getaway series. It encourages couples to get sex out of the bedroom and do some things different from what they typically do. It is the highest end series they've done, shot in locales all over the Western United States. He believes that everybody can have a more interesting and enriched sex life if they make an effort. A lot of people don't make an effort, they don't really try, they don't make it as important as it should be.
